Every Monday night, the Arizona Emergency Net – Maricopa meets on 2 meters FM for training and exercise in the public service communication arts. We focus on preparation and readiness for public service – be it scheduled events like bike races or drills, or emergencies such as storm damage or terrorist attacks. Someone has to be ready. This net is dedicated to addressing that challenge. The Arizona Emergency Net – Maricopa also activates during threats or emergencies affecting Maricopa County

8-20-2012 - Disaster Communications - The Real Story - KE7KUS

We covered real-life experiences serving in an EMCOMM role. W7EMU provided a great example of ad-hoc implementation of amateur radio when a county communications system was taken out by a lightning strike on the communications tower.

- We discussed who to report to when arriving on a disaster scene. It was noted that you may find yourself reporting to everyone from a trained emergency manager to an ER nurse to another amateur radio operator already on scene.

- We discussed how amateur radio operators are received when they arrive on scene. This discussion included ideas on how to create a positive perception of amateur radio in disaster situations, to include:
1) a sharp and professional appearance,
2) help out wherever it's needed - be humble and willing to serve in any way necessary,
3) be sensitive to the fact that emergency managers often have very limited amounts of free time - remember that you may provide a highly desired service, but are still a small piece of a much larger puzzle,
4) be prepared to provide a concise summary of your capabilities and limitations when you introduce yourself to the emergency manager/coordinator, and
5) when you arrive, provide the "who sent you" information up front - establish your credentials by name-dropping in a good way.

- Finally, we passed along a significant amount of information to new hams interested in getting involved in public service.
